Indian man, woman jailed in Dubai for steamy text messages

    (IANS)

An Indian man and woman, working as cabin crew for Emirates airlines, have received a jail sentence here for exchanging steamy text messages, a media report said Thursday.

The conviction said the sexual content of the texts suggested the pair planned to 'commit sin', which is a reference to an extramarital affair that is illegal in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), The Telegraph reported.

The man, 47, and the woman, 42, worked as cabin crew for Emirates airlines and were sentenced to three months in jail, said authorities.

The text messages came up in a divorce case by the woman's estranged husband.

The court ruled there wasn't enough evidence to determine whether the couple had an affair - that would have likely brought a harsher sentence.

A court had sentenced them to six months in jail followed by deportation in December. However, an appeals court reduced the jail period and gave them the option to remain in the country.

A British couple earlier this week said they will appeal a one-month jail sentence for exchanging a kiss in a restaurant.

Two Britons were sentenced to three months in jail in 2008 for what authorities described as sex on the beach. The sentences were later suspended.
