Ethiopian troops clash with Islamists in Somalia

At least 35 people have been killed in violent clashes between Ethiopian troops and Islamist insurgents in central Somalia.
Eyewitnesses claim that civilians are amongst the dead.
Islamist militants attacked a Somali police station on Thursday, triggering heavy clashes with police.
The insurgents attacked Waberi police station, triggering a heavy exchange of fire of rockets and machine guns.
The clashes came a day after at least 23 were killed near the village of Garsani, some 300 kilometres north of Mogadishu, when insurgents ambushed an Ethiopian military convoy.
Several witnesses said at least 13 civilians and eight Ethiopian soldiers were killed in the fighting, while the insurgents admitted to losing two fighters in the battle.
Late on Wednesday Ethiopian forces killed at least 12 nomads in Walaweyne, about 90 kilometres east of Mogadishu,
Similar incidents have been reported in other parts of the country, including civilian casualties.
Earlier this week Amnesty International published an alarming rapport about increasing human-rights violations committed by both the military and rebels.
The human-rights organization says gang rape and torture takes place on a large scale.
It is impossible to get an accurate picture of what goes on in Somalia, Amnesty International says, because aid workers are pressured to keep silent.

????We live in strange timesâ¦The U.S in the old days would secretly back brutal regimes in there efforts to thieve from the third world.
Now they just try to put a positive spin on it. This is the latest USA attempt to colonise a country that enjoys a hugely strategic location on the Horn of Africa, has the longest coastline in Africa, has huge reserves of untapped oil, gas and uranium and a people who have shown a deep yearning to be unified under Islamic rule.There are a lot of ignorant people out there.
The TFG is a puppet government set up by a foreign invader.
Just as in Iraq instead of calling the people the invaders are killing Somalians or Iraqiâs we hear âinsurgentâ âal Qaedaâ or âIslamic extremistâ.
It is a Muslim nation so you would expect the Muslims to want to fight against a Christian backed invasion.
Would be good to see another black hawk down though?

Strange Times! This is a world without LoveAs some have pointed out today.. there seems to be lots of conflict.. you may notice that even within the postings on this site.. | AMNESTY International has accused the U.S Backed Ethiopian army of killing 21 people, including an imam and several Islamic scholars, at a Mogadishu mosque and says seven of the victims had their throats slit. Amnesty said those killed at the mosque included imam Sheikh Saiid Yaha and several scholars of the moderate Tabligh group that operated there.
âEye-witnesses report that those killed inside the mosque were unarmed civilians taking no active part in hostilities,â Amnesty said.
âSeven of the 21 were reported to have died after their throats were cut - a form of extra-judicial execution practiced by Ethiopian forces in Somalia.â

| Amnesty urged the Ethiopian military to release all 41 children it said were held after the mosque raid. âWitnesses have told Amnesty International that Ethiopian forces would only release the children from their military base in north Mogadishu âonce they had been investigatedâ and âif they were not terroristsâ,â it said.
Some of the children - who were aged as young as nine - were reported to have been freed, though the majority were still in custody, Amnesty said. Witnesses said they had seen beheaded bodies lying outside the mosque after the fighting.
